Cognition-Based Driver Evaluations
The Memory and Wellness Center offers a comprehensive driving evaluation to assess the cognitive and psychological abilities involved in an individual’s ability to drive safely. This cognitive evaluation examines attention and concentration, visual-spatial abilities, processing speed, and higher-order thinking skills, including problem-solving and decision-making.
A clinical interview is also conducted to assess the individual’s psychological and cognitive status and identify any changes related to memory loss, cognitive decline, mild cognitive impairment (MCI), dementia, or Alzheimer’s disease that may affect driving. Based on the results, appropriate recommendations are provided to the individual and, with the participant’s authorization, their physician or other health care provider.
As part of the evaluation, the individual also participates in an on-road driving test with a qualified driving instructor . This essential component of the driving safety evaluation assesses the individual’s ability to safely operate a vehicle, follow traffic rules and regulations, follow directions, process information, respond appropriately to road conditions, and make safe decisions while driving.
The overall goal of this comprehensive driving evaluation is to promote safety for the participant, their family, and others in the community while supporting independence and quality of life. The evaluation can help identify cognitive or psychological changes that may affect driving ability and provide individualized recommendations to address these concerns. Follow-up counseling is available when needed, along with information about transportation options and assistance developing an alternative transportation plan when continued driving is no longer recommended.
